Yah, it's pretty insane. I did finally hear from my friend and she is out of there (but she's in Biloxi - so not that much better) - but she was taking a helicopter back in to check on the animals at the Species Survival Center (one of the few places where Whooping Cranes are being raised). She's the bird keeper there. Frankly, I'm surprised they were willing to let a helicopter be used for that purpose - I figured they would all still be used in rescue efforts for people. I haven't heard how it went yet. (I think she was going yesterday, but it could be today.)
I can't even imagine what it would be like being left there right now.
