I ran into the process the largest debit thing before, but fortunately had
not had an overdraft for a while, so they wrote the charges off. It didn't
hurt that one of the charges was definitely due to their failure to process
a credit. The dollar eighty at a coffeehouse, plus five dollars for gas, I
guess they decided to be nice, I dunno. My argument at the time was that
those should go through then I would have have one overdraft (the largest
item) not three.
What they said was that the biggest debit is more likely to be an important
bill (rent, electricity) and that is what they do it that way, and sorry,
I'd have to eat the two charges. They never appeared though.

This was Bank of America, by the way. They seem to have a pretty firm policy
-- they will remove an overdraft charge *once* then after that it has to be
a bank error. They do make them though. I have had deposits go through as
withdrawals and all sort of funky stuff.
Try talking to the branch manager where you opened the account. She has to
be the one to take the charge off.
