I would try to get it off, cats can be poisoned by all sorts of things
and better safe than sorry.

You need a shower or bath with a shower attachment, some shampoo
(preferably one for cats), a towel for the cat to stand on in the
shower/bath (gives them a bit more of a sense of security and
something to stick their claws into other than your arm), and possibly
some strong gloves.

The best place to get a grip on a cat is the scruff of the neck, be
assertive and whatever you do don't be scared - they sense it.
