My mistake... should have went north on the 101 to the 80. Going south on the 101 looked shorter on the map...LOL
I am by no means an expert on the "Bay Area Commune," but another possibility from that location may have been to go straight west through Tracy to I-5 and then north. More miles I believe, but could have been faster, maybe, possibly, depending on how many other people where trying the same thing.
