Well given that the first real chronicler that was independent of the
church was Flavius Josephus who wrote about 90 years after the
crucifixion, there's not a lot of real evidence that Jeasu Bar Joseph
ever really existed, at least in the biblical idea of Christ. There
has been some speculation that he was a part of the Essenes - a
radical Jewish sect whose philosophy mirrors many Christian beliefs.
That would also explain the crucifixion - the execution of a
ringleader of a dangerous group.
In other words, as far as I can see if he existed at all, the story
grew in the telling over the years.
