My wife and I watched 'Crash' last night and then got into a
discussion about prejudice. That discussion led to talking about some
of her friends that refuse to go see 'brokenback mountain' and don't
want it shown. I called them out as being prejudiced since they
haven't even seen the movie to know if the subject matter is treated
tastefully or not.

My wife argued that it wasn't being prejudice against gays since
homosexuality was immoral. I countered with the fact that this was
based only on someones beliefs.

She said it wasn't a prejudice if it was based on a belief. I
countered that all prejudices are based on a belief. Mainly that
<insert group> aren't as good as <insert group>

She said it wasn't prejudice since it wasn't natural. She said a
black man cannot not be black, a hispanic man cannot not be hispanic,
but a gay doesn't have to be gay. I countered saying that I think, in
some cases, it's just as genetic as being black, white or gray.

Then we went to sleep. Funny thing is that I don't consider my wife
prejudice normally.

Anyway, this morning, just to spur some debate, I looked up some birth
statistics. These come from Larimer County in CO even though I don't
live here. They were just easy for me to find online.

Broad Categories of Birth Defects
Rates per 10,000
Larimer County, 1998-2002

Heart Anomalies - 197.6
Genital/Urinary - 164.3
Muscular/Skeletal - 135.8
Stomach, Intestinal - 54.8
Sensory Impairments 25.8
Lung Anomalies - 24.5
Eye Anomalies -24.5
Centrl Nervous System - 20.8
Mouth/Facial - 16.4
Genetic Defects - 16.4
Other Disabilities - 13.8

Specific Types of Birth Defects and Disabilities
Rates per 10,000
Larimer County, 1998-2002

Specific Delays in Development - 10.1
Cleft Lip with or w/o cleft palate - 10.4
Cleft Palate w/o cleft lip - 6.2
Infantile Cerebral Palsy - 4.6
Arm/Hand Limb Reduction - 2.5
Total Anencephalus and Spina Bifida - 1.9
Spina Bifida w/o Anencephalus - 1.9
Cystic Fibrosis - 1.9
Mental Retardation - 3.1
Leg/Foot Limb Reduction - 1.4

So after spewing out these statistics, what I'm asking now is this:

Given that obviously there are a percentage of babies born with some
type of birth defect or abnormality or difference outside the norm,
how can the argument be made that every boy baby born will grow up to
fall in love with a woman and every girl baby born will grow up to
fall in love with a man because that's the way of nature.
