If it's (as I presume) and older unit (not the slim-line) you might be able
to get a free laser replacement as well.

Sony lost a lawsuit over the "Disc Read Error" problem.  Even if the unit is
out of warranty you can call support, report a "Disc Read" problem and
they'll fix it for the cost of shipping.

I had to get one of mine done and the turn around was quite good.
