I've always LOVED "Comic Chat" (later "MSChat"). MS has essentially abandoned it but there's a thriving community around it making characters, languages packs and add-ons: http://www.mermeliz.com/cchat.htm It's not for everybody and doesn't offer all the new stuff (file transfers, macros, bots, etc) but it's just damn neat.
