Heh... My dog has recently taken to this habit, too, and WOW, I never
knew breath could be THAT BAD. The sad part is that when she comes in
and breathes her foul breath on us, she still looks so adorable. It's
hard to be mad. Well, ok, not that hard.

When we catch her doing it (as in, she's standing next to us, catching
her), we grab her muzzle, give it a shake, and a firm "No!" The muzzle
thing seems to be the most effective punishment we've been able to
find. It gets the point across, and apparently grabbing the muzzle is
an act of dominance, so she understands all the better. That said, most
of the time we don't catch her 'cause she goes out alone.

My suggestion: If you take your pup out to poop, bring her out on a
leash and when she's done, immediately walk her away from the poop and
give her treats and love. Not sure if this'll do much, but it's worth a
shot. You might also try keeping her on a leash intentionally near the
poop, and give her a leash correction each time she reaches down for a
snack.
