Truth be told, I have toyed with the idea of building something along these lines myself - the concept isn't really that difficult but every time one of these, "Screw Yahoo" moments comes up I'm up to my eyestalks in More Important Things (tm). So this time instead of looking at rolling my own I'm hunting for an alternative. If you're curious, the group is an Amateur Radio "Help" group... our primary goal is to help people who want to earn or upgrade their FCC Amateur Radio license. To this end we organize give-aways (people passing on study materials, old equipment or even subscriptions to a popular study site), information resources (files) and a scheduled chat session. The group was initially formed in November of 2002... the first "Screw Yahoo" moment happened about a year later when their system became completely unresponsive for just our group's messages (site worked but no emails went out) for the better part of 3 weeks. We formed a new version of the group and to date there are 2,350 members and an average of 600 message per month.
