All along I've thought this guy was one of those outsiders who wanted
in.  His capture and trial actually gave him the attention he's always
craved; now that it's over he has no venue for his fantasy so he's
trying to start up a new trial.

Being hated is a great ego booster second only to being loved.  He now
realizes he's been given the worst of all fates for his personality:
indifference.  Al Quaeda doesn't give a crap about him, France doesn't
give a crap, and now Americans don't either.

His worst fear is realized: he's nobody.  He's The Stranger.
