I think with the "force field" the only thing "guided" about it is the direction the gun tube is pointing when it is fired.

Actually on a ship radar _is_ used to paint incoming targets in the same manner and Phalanx high speed cannon are deployed to provided close-in anti-missle defense. Wasn't it against torpedoes (like those in Iran's arsenal) that a system like the proposed would not work?
