It isn't looking good, but I think there is still a shot. It all hinges on the Sunnis and Shiites reigning in the death squads and agreeing to fight with words rather than guns and bombs. I hate to use the term civil war to describe what is going on right now, because it doesn't seem to fit the conventional definition. It almost seems more like a gangland war than anything else. Think about it- targeted assassinations in people's homes, on the way to work, killings of family members of prominent people on both sides, torture, executions, kidnappings. All the ingredients of a Godfather film.
Sooner or later these guys might actually figure out that they would be better off not shooting at each other. Getting the economy going again will help a lot, but the country is a long way from that sort of progress.
