As a fat kid that was often abused by the jocks in school I've never had
much use for organized sports. But my son (seven years old) is turning out
to be quite the athlete and I don't want to inhibit that so I got tickets to
Friday's home game for our local AAA Baseball team (the Scranton-Wilke Barre
Red Barons).

It was fun. Only about 7,000 fans showed up to the 25,000 seat stadium: we
ended up 10th row back from the home dugout with nobody else in our row so
plenty of room to stretch.

The game was a little one-sided. The Barons were up 7 to 1 in the 6th
partly thanks to a grand slam in the third and ended up 7-3.

Lots of goodwill in the stands, no crap from the players. I was also
surprised how much of the rules baseball I remembered... I told him
(surprisingly enough, correctly) how a ground-rule double worked and what
both "RBI" and "ERA" stood for.

He had a lot of fun - but got a little fidgety near the end. The stadium
does a pretty impressive fireworks display after every Friday game so that
capped the evening well.

I'm not sure if he's going to stick with it but all told I wouldn't mind so
much if he did.
