yeah you know, I was thinking about this and maybe there should be classic (musical excellence), classic (just a good song), classic (evokes the period) and classic (nooooo. not again). Maybe also classic (celebrity whine).
For instance, when Money came out (yes I was alive) I lived in Chantilly France and the kids used to hang out at this one cafe. The jukebox had two English-language songs which were viewed as being cooler than the French songs, which were perhaps the things that the parents listened to. So those two songs were played over and over and over and over and over. When I hear Money I am right back there, but ummmm, really, I have heard it enough. (The other one was Angie, which you never hear anymore for some reason). Not a bad song originally, but now makes my ears bleed - Stairway to Heaven. For another example. Barracuda by Heart. But there were songs I hated when they came out and they are STILL being played. Double Vison, for instance. Feel my eyes with that double vision... No surprise, with that double vision... what does that even *mean*? Material Girl. Rock and Roll Fantasy. Anything by Journey. Boston. Celebrity whines? Well, how about "My Maserati does 185... I lost my license, now I don't drive." Or Have a Cigar?
