I had a requirement from a client that we be in communication via Skype
Chat, so I went and installed. I really like it, especially the fun
"hidden" emoticons, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they don't
have a means to be able to tell when the person you're chatting with is
typing. It can lead to some awkward silences b/c you're not sure if the
other person is responding or not. I googled this, and in the Skype forums,
the reason is put that "Microsoft owns that technology, and you'll never see
it implemented in Skype, even through there are thousands of requests for
it".

WTF? Microsoft "owns" the technology? Why does basically every other chat
program have it, then? And how can MS "own" that? To me, that's like
saying AT&T "owns" the busy signal. Anyone know any more about this?
