You should be able to get a very reasonable rate from your own phome company to call uk numbers. I had 7 cents a minute when I was there.
You need a triband phone .. And it needs to be unlocked in order to accept a sim from over there. Pay as you go phones are a dime a dozen there, and what I might suggest if you don't want to get an international rate from your company is get a phone on ebay have it shipped to where you are staying and collect it when you get there. Or just pick one up from any high street shop.
