I definitely think that the dems put out more centrist's this campaign season, but I don't agree with the second part. The dems only have a razor thin majority. If they want to keep it for 2008 and get one of theirs in office, they're going to have to move more to the center. It's easier for them to piss of the indie's now more than ever.
