I go out shopping on Black Friday because you can get things cheaper on
Black Friday than any other day of the year. That's a simple fact. Now
I'm not totally insane, so the only place I went at 6am was Home Depot
to get a lighted christmas wreath that was on a fantastic sale. We also
went to Target, but only because we were already out and figured we
might as well get some of the shopping for our daughter done, and
numerous things she wanted were on sale.

Could I have waited until Saturday? Sure. I wouldn't have gotten the
wreath though (I know this because we bought the wrong size and I went
to return it 4 hours later, and they were completely out of them, and
they won't be 40% off when they get them back in stock). I also
wouldn't have gotten the 5 DVDs we bought for $8 because they would've
been out of stock and I might've had to have paid $12 for them a week later.

For some people, saving money is important. For others, I guess
fighting consumerism is important.

I'm not spending money that I'm not going to spend anyway, so the only
affect on me is that I have to get up really early one day out of the
year, and maybe stand in some long lines (this year, I didn't actually
stand in any long lines, I just got up early)

Here's how I fight consumerism: I don't buy christmas anything before
Thanksgiving. I don't listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving
(one local station starts playing Christmas music November 1!)

I did, a few years ago, purchase a set of Calphalon cookware as a
present to ourselves the day before Thanksgiving, because Kohl's had it
on sale, and Calphalon rarely goes on sale, and I already knew it wasn't
going to be on sale the day *AFTER*. So we went to Kohl's for the
pre-Thanksgiving sale. If you've ever been to Kohl's on Black Friday,
you'd understand :)
