Here's the Snopes page on this: http://www.snopes.com/language/apocryph/cambridge.asp They (at least) have been unable to discover any actual studies on this specifically. At the very least it seems like most everybody can actually read this - it's not something specific to only half the population. Also it doesn't work for everything - when I first saw it a few years ago (and thought it was the absolute coolest thing I ever saw) I built a CF function to mangle the words of any text like this. Most of the results were illegible. There are references on the Snopes page to further information about why this may be the case.
