ok so this is purely a comic geek rant. i'm a comic geek, but haven't been following Smallville. i've sampled it in the past and it wasn't really enough "comic book" so much as "90210" with an alien guy in it.
i've heard bits and pieces about the show that make me regret not watching it. hearing that Zod was in it...that Aquaman has made an appearance...Impulse (think Kid Flash for you non-comic geeks)...Cyborg... all (theoretically) cool stuff. so I hear tonite's episode is gonna have all of the "guest" heroes forming a quasi-Justice League (effectively showing the very early origins of the team)...and Yahoo! is showing the first 12 minutes of the episode online. w00t! so I couldn't help but check it out. yes, there was kind of a geeky "high" about seeing Oliver Queen and Bart Allen (green arrow and impulse, respectively) on screen. even though they still came off as mega-90210 and nothing like their comic book counterparts. but that's not what bothered me. there was no "WTF" moment up until... a young Lois Lane is kissing Oliver Queen. now, that in and of itself isn't so bad. but as they're sucking face, Ollie's cell phone rings, and he says he's gotta bolt. Lois (visibly disappointed) says (and I paraphrase), "this relationship seems to be all interruptus and no coitus". THAT...that right there. that was a huge DOUBLEYOU-TEE-EFF. this is supposed to be a show about Superman. granted, Superman as a younger, pre-Superman Superman...but still... i guess the networks have to cater to the masses and there are probably more 90210-type viewers than comic book geek viewers. i mean, i totally get that there are going to be deviations from the comic book. the biggest blockbuster comic book based movies deviated from the source material. maybe i'm old-fashioned. shit maybe i'm just old. but it really bugged me that a show based on a comic book (that's based on the world's biggest boy scout) is seemingly OK with endorsing casual, meaningless sex. i dunno. maybe it's the comic book geek in me too that's bothered by it being lois lane and somebody other than clark kent/superman. i mean, i've never really gotten upset over who's-boinking-who-this-week on any other show. but this...this kinda bugged me. >sigh< -- Charlie Griefer ================================================ "...All the world shall be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
