How does nappy have any slavery overtones? It isn't a word I use just
amongst my friends. It is a word used in common society to describe any
number of things that are made up of tight loops or curls. Not just hair.

Meaning through context is important, but so is the meaning of the word.
Nappy on to itself has no racist overtones or slavery overtones.

So best I can tell nappy is from the Middle English word noppe used to
describe fabrics like wool. So I just simply don't understand where it went
from how you described a certain type of fabric to being a derogatory or
offensive word.

Cotton Pickin' I understand, but that clearly describes something that most
people are familiar with.
