that was one of the myriad of errors I would get. When I was trying to set up search I tried to find references to *what* needed to be full text indexed and couldn't find anything, then I looked at the DBs that had been created programmatically and saw that they had the Full Text index checkbox (Options) checked but no full text catalogs.
So I went to each of the DBs I had created manually and checked the box in Options. Then it occurred to me that it might be the default SSP. So I created a new one (SSP). After creating the new SSP I moved a previously created Web App into it and then went to SSP Admin page and clicked Search Settings Then click Content sources and crawl settings and name the site you want to have crawled and when/how often. then let it populate. takes about an hour on my box.
