I just replaced mine last year....

- Make sure you've got it turned off
- The problem could be in the capacitor, which would be much cheaper. Some
AC's have two capacitors: a run time and a start up capacitor. Basically
they just provide a boost. If the start capacitor is bad, the unit wont
start up. If that's the problem, it's MUCH cheaper than a replacement unit.
- Another potential problem is freon leakage. If your unit is low on freon,
the lines will freeze up and the unit will be unable to cool the house. It
will keep running, and eventually the motor will burn out. Fixing leaks can
be a pain in the butt (if it's in the line), or relatively cheap and
inexpensive (if the leak is in or around the valves on the compressor)

Basically i've been through all of these stages...the freon leak, then the
capacitor going out, and eventually purchasing a new unit. I paid about 2100
installed for a....a....damn, i forgot the size of the compressor. That also
included running a new line all the way into the furnace blower.
