Not that there's anything "indy label" about John Mayer or Vertical
Horizon... except that they WERE indie label artists originally.

I used to discover all kinds of cool music thanks to AWARE Records..
they do annual compilations of "up and comering artists" that have not
been signed to major labels. The Aware 2 compilation (1993, I think)
featured songs from the following unsigned, independent artists:

Better than Ezra "Good"
Matchbox 20 (then known as Tabitha's Secret) "3 AM"
Hootie and the Blowfish "The Old Man And I"
The Verve Pipe
Vertical Horizon
Edwin McCain

That's some pretty good talent scouting there!

Guster was on Aware 3... Train was on Aware 5... Shawn Mullins (who
had a gigantic hit called "Lullaby" but was otherwise a one hit
wonder) was also on Aware 5. John Mayer and Five for Fighting both
had records released by Aware Records *BEFORE* they were well known
names....

They do good stuff up there at AWARE :)

I managed their online store for like 5-6 years from 1997-2003.
