Funny, I never seem to make it to the Magnificent Mile. I'm more of a roaming the neighborhoods girl, myself. We have family there, so we're usually in one of the family neighborhoods (Bucktown or Irving Park) - which is good in that you find some really great out of the way places. Like this one for ice cream: http://centerstage.net/restaurants/margies-candies.html (It's called Marge's candies - but it's really about the ice cream.) But, it's bad in that we never actually make it to any of the touristy places - like the museums.
