Absolutely, although I think that each American needs to decide that
for themselves; the government shouldn't have a policy of actively
hiding the costs be those costs lives or money.

Having just seen 1776 it was really interesting to watch the
Continental Congress debate whether or not to declare war on Britain.
The debate lasted over a year and there were 2 camps:

(1.) Yes, it doesn't matter how much more powerful the UK is, we're
already at war and if don't fight now we'll never be able to.  John
Adams was a the leader here.

(2.) No, we had a disagreement with Parliament only and it was
resolvable.  Further war was certain death.  John Dickenson famously
abstained from signing the Declaration of Independence, but fought
during the war.

The major tenet as these debates went on was that the colonies had to
all agree to fight - the vote for war had to be unanimous.  Further it
was famously said that if the population did not agree to fight
(before or during), then there could be no war.

I'd like to think the main concept (since it's what our system of
government is based on) was give the people the information and let
them decide.  That's clearly not been Bush's policy.
