Actually I think they are looking into that.

The main issue is that she wants everything to go my mother-in-law if she's
still living, and if not to my kids (her not-legally-recognized grandkids)
as she has no children of her own.

My mother-in-law has two kids (my wife and her brother) so her wishes differ
slightly - but again it would start with going to her wife if she's still
living.

Still I think you're idea about a conditional trust is a good one - I've
been trying to stay out of the whole mess since I don't really have a stake
or skills - maybe I'll try to bring it up during the post-Thanksgiving
dinner relax-a-thon.
