I am sure that some in power didn't want the status quo changed. I just read somewhere recently (it escapes me now though) about a Catholic response to the rigor that German historians brought to Bible research. They created a school to train scholars similarly to the opposing scholars in order to combat the information coming from the scholars who were examining the Bible in more detail with more thoroughness then every before. They didn't excommunicate, execute, or imprison everyone, especially those who were in regions out of their control. I think it is a little different now.
