Go to your local muni golf course, and buy the groundskeeper a beer.
He is a trained grass man. He will know what to seed with, and what to
overseed with (if you live in a place where summer/winter can take
advantage of 2 seasons of grass growth)

Of course, mud pit sounds like drainage might also be part of the problem.
