I was watching something last night (Fox, Stewart or Colbert, forget 
which) and this question was asked. The pundit who was being interviewed 
pretty much said that McCain needs to stay away from the likes or Romney 
and Huckleberry and look somewhere else for a VP.

And although in general a VP does not do shit, they do have two 
important roles. To step in and take over the presidency when he is 
incapacitated or killed, and to cast potentially crucial tie-breaking 
votes. That last one I think is important. I would think that you would 
want someone who thinks like you and is on board with your agenda as 
president so that in case he needs to cast that vote, you can be assured 
it will go your way.
