Mea culpa... You are right, superdelegates as such were implemented in 1980. There was a similar mechanism in place prior to the 1972 primaries, which I was confusing with superdelegates. In 72 and 76 the DNC unsuccessfully tried to fix the problem, which led to the creation of superdelegates in 1980.
