Mea culpa...

You are right, superdelegates as such were implemented in 1980. There was a
similar mechanism in place prior to the 1972 primaries, which I was
confusing with superdelegates. In 72 and 76 the DNC unsuccessfully tried to
fix the problem, which led to the creation of superdelegates in 1980.

I love Wikipedia :D

According to wikipedia, the superdelegate rule was implemented after 1980.

Superdelegates chose Mondale over Hart as the democratic candidate in 1984
and Reagan won the presidency, 525 electoral votes to 13.

The electoral map is quite humorous...

The superdelegates have long been a part of the Democratic Party's
nomination process; in fact, conflict between the superdelegates and
delegates at large was one of the reasons for the tensions at the 1968
Democratic National Convention.

Superdelegates are receiving more media time than usual this year because it
is such a tight race between Hillary and Obama.

dont you think that when this starts to happen, its a BIG SIGN of what is
imminent? i mean doesnt she realize that clinton in office is hardly a
change?

also, im sure the notion of a superdelegate isnt new, but i dont remember it
every being in my vocab... has our lovely media coined this?
