It may be... but I don't know that tech.

All blu-ray really is at its core is swapping the traditional red laser with
a blue laser.  Blue light has a shorter wavelength and so can "see" smaller
features.  Smaller features means more data in the same area.

The platform adds in all sorts of technical icing (and DRM) but the core
space increase is completely due to the shorter-wavelength laser.
