Did you by any chance recently install a lot of fonts? Way back, in the days of old, I remember similar behavior and it was caused by installing too many fonts. Some internal heap couldn't handle all of the references and it responded by hosing things. I've not had this happed in XP or Vista tho'... not even sure if it CAN happen. But the behavior definitely sounds the same.
