The effect of fuel costs has started to ripple throughout the economy, into
formerly unexpected areas like the cost of basic food staples. Whether
because of bio-fuels, speculation, or hoarding, the cost of corn, wheat,
rice, and other basic staples has shot up alarmingly in the last several
months.

While most of us in developed countries can afford to pay double and triple
prices for basic food staples, in developing nations, such price spikes are
a potential catastrophe. We could be looking at a resurgence in hunger
around the world. OPEC needs to face up to their responsibility for this
mess and help ease the price of oil. The developed world can pay, but the
developing world is getting wiped out.
