And the the National Guard has repeatedly reiterated that whenever they are
involved in anything military (as opposed to natural disaster work), they
are not in any way, shape or form under the command of the Governor. Oh, how
I wish they were. If they were, then Oregon's National Guard units would
have come home a long time ago.

Interestingly enough, when the National Guard was nationalized for military
functions, Oregon instituted its own militia. They are called the Oregon
State Defense Force and they are about the most obscure thing Oregon has. If
it wasn't for knowing Search and Rescue folks and being a Ham operator, I
never would have heard of these guys.

Anyway, Palin has no involvement in any of the strategic or tactical use of
the military (army, navy, air force or guard) in Alaska. I'm sure she is
briefed on matters and I'm sure that she has a heavy burden talking to
families of soliders deployed from the state as any other governor has. A
non-trivial matter to be sure. But no different for being in Alaska than
being in Iowa.
