In context, the market bottom after 9/11 was 7528 down from 9601 on 9/10, a loss of 22% The loss on Black Monday in 1987 was also around 22% in the US, but much worst world-wide The current loss in value since the peak of 14,066 last October is around 27%. In 1929 crash, the market lost 30% of value over 3 days, then continued to slide until it has lost roughly 90% of it's value by July, 1932.
I suspect the government will suspend trading over the next few days so they can regroup and figure out what to do next. With T-Bills as low as they are, I don't expect a run on the funds. Nowhere to put the money, and if you don't reinvest you incur capital gains tax at 28%, which is greater than percentage that prices dropped. And as strange as it sounds, several of the mutual funds in my IRA actually had gains today.
