I love the classic adventure stories so I thought I'd give this show a try. Usually I wouldn't bother (I love the classic adventures too much to watch the crap that most adaptations are) but this one did at least one thing right: it's set in the same period as the book.
So I thought I'd give it a shot. It's not great. Characters are added or changed for nothing more than political correctness. "Friday" is now a erudite master of languages, a peer and brother rather than a servant. We also get an amazingly capable, inexplicably beautiful pirate princess (all of the pirates are filthy, toothless and scruffy... but she, of course, has perfect skin, teeth and nails). The show could also easily do without the melodramatic flashbacks. But for all that it's surprisingly good. It's lushly produced, competently acted and nicely action-oriented. It reminds me, very favorably, of the latest crop of BBC action shows ("Robin Hood", "Primeval", etc) - similar production values and tones. I'm not sure if I'll keep watching it (there's definitely better shows and we don't really watch that much - the BBC's 12 episode seasons are really nice for that) but it's definitely not nearly as bad as I would bet. Now if only somebody would do a decent version of "Tarzan".
