Ft. Hamilton Station, NY - "We are so deeply in debt that Governor David Paterson, who, as a State Senator, voted to increase spending more times than not, is now speaking out for spending cuts that we expect to fully support," said Conservative Party State Chairman, Michael R. Long. 'There is no time left, for those responsible for the budget, to come up with gimmicks and tricks to prolong the inevitable. Wall Street can not bail out New York as it has in the past and the reality is dramatic...cuts must be made to education, Medicaid, programs that do not work, member items, land purchases and in all state agencies...and all of this must be adopted by the returning members on November 18," Long stated. "Cuts must be enacted on November 18 and when enacted they can not be passed on to localities," Long stressed. "Mandate relief must accompany the budget cuts." "Now is not the time for partisan bickering, nor is it the time to place the blame elsewhere; spending is the problem and spending must be reduced when the Members return. The Governor's budget, when submitted in December, must eliminate every item that is not absolutely necessary for the safety and well being of New York's citizens," said Long. The days of building sports stadiums at taxpayers expense and giving incentives to businesses, only to have them relocate in other states when they expire, must end. The best way to keep business in New York State is to reduce the tax burden on them. New York is not alone in its financial morass, every state that believes that government, not private industry, is the economic engine is on the verge of bankruptcy. For far too long, government has been spending as much as it could to stay in power, buying votes with member items and tax incentives. It is now the eleventh hour and New York is on the brink of insolvency. Governor Paterson understands; it is time the Members of the Legislature heed his message. They have borrowed, bonded, and taxed everything possible. Now they must cut spending.
