At a high level, I expect the platform to be a starting point for a series of evolutionary mutations that may result in any number of application solutions that share some common DNA and vary to some level depending on the purpose for each application. To extend the bio-science metaphor, each application solution built on the platform represents a new species.
At a lower level, I expect individual developers to add, remove, or change features and functionality to suit their own needs. For instance, the current AJAX implementation uses ExtJS, but I would expect some people to prefer an implementation of JQuery or some other framework, and there could be an evolutionary branch of the platform that implements JQuery rather than Ext. At an even lower level, someone may re-write a particular method in the system to be more efficient without requiring any changes to the core API. My aim is for the "core" platform to be free and open source, and to allow developers to build solutions - free or commercial - on top of the platform. The evolutionary value of this approach will be felt as more developers participate in sharing their individual mutations with the community, whether through sharing source code or simply registering any core changes they make to the system. There are lots of details to work out, but the general approach should work. I just registered the domain cfcolony.org. I'll see if I can get something up this weekend.
