If the problems of charity were solved by private work, there would be no incentive for the government to get involved.
For those who rail against a "socialist state", get off your butt, and help your neighbor, so the government doesn't feel the need. (This is also my feeling about abortions. If you are against abortions, remove the need. And find homes for all babies that need adoption.) (I also support food banks, red cross, salvation army, local churches, scouts, schools, vfw, local teams. I don't "tithe", but try to do my share, both with time and money. I also am doing everything I can to ensure that me and mine do not need outside help.
