For most things, yes. But some are great - "Hitchhiker's Guide" actually has two great ones: one read by Stephen Fry and another read by Douglas Adams - both are BRILLIANT. Most authors just can't read very well, but some add significantly to the understanding. I've got an old set of Roger Zelazny reading the "Amber" series that's really good. I agree tho', it's more miss than hit, but some are worth tracking down.
