IIRC Google kinda just appeared on the scene. Worked ok, but didn't return many results at first. I think I preferred AltaVista at the time... I do know that when Google launched there wasn't a huge international fanfare. It certainly wasn't launched as the "AltaVista killer" or anything like that. Perhaps Google launched at a time when organic growth was the norm rather than the exception... If Wolfram isn't the killer app as advertised right out of the gate, it'll die a horrible, albeit quick, death.
