I do feel sad for the puppy.

In the back of my mind though, I think about natural selection and how
long dogs have been bred to be dependent on humans.  If the wild, an
animal dies when it eats poison or something dangerous, eliminating it
from the gene pool and assuring the animals that so survive don't have
a tendency to eat those things.  Of course, golf balls don't occur
naturally in the wild either....
