Actually, *many* people of faith do greatly disagree with religious symbols of
this type. You'll find Protestants in particular greatly disdain the veneration
of objects (that's more a Catholic thing, although certainly not universal
among them either). It's one thing I've found interesting in studying the
Shroud for instance, that there's not a lot of correlation between people's
faith and what they believe in terms of whether it is or is not the burial
cloth of Jesus...a great deal of people of faith strongly disagree with the
very notion that such a thing would even exist (and if you ask most Christians
about it, the vast majority will know little more about it than the general
population), and you'll likewise find many people that are not Christian but do
think the evidence does point to it being linked with the historical figure of
Jesus, but that it was of natural origin and thus says nothing about him being
God.

But I'm not sure I follow your assessment that someone that is looking for
verification of their faith is "fooling themselves". That would only be the
case if you knew for certain that a God does not exist. He may or may not
choose to reveal himself in such a tangible way, but does that therefore mean
that such a search must be pointless? One may not ever be able to "prove" that
God exists, but that doesn't mean you can't still look for evidence as to
whether for instance, Biblical accounts of events have a historical basis.
