This is a clinic/shelter I have done some volunteer work for in Albuquerque.
The writer is an emergency-room doctor who founded the clinic and teaches at
the medical school. Just thought some people might want to help a real
person rather than the Red Cross or some other faceless agency.

No pressure either way; I am not involved enough with this group to know
whether you do or don't, but I agree with the sentiment that it's becoming
intolerable to sit around watching CNN. Feel free to donate, quote me,
forward the email or ignore it altogether.

Back to work.

Dear Dana,

✈ Shortly after the Haiti earthquake I got a call from McD.. an ER doc
friend/colleague.. who said "When are we going"? I said something like "I'm
in, but do we go with an agency or wing it?" So for the past couple weeks
the emails to various agencies and concerned individuals have been flying.
Neither of us want to be an extra mouth to feed or added burden. Nor are we
interested in becoming patients ourselves. But we're pretty certain we'll be
able to help if we can define a specific need.

McD has found the need at a clinic in a town called
Hinche<http://epcsvr.office-on-the.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=227&qid=2564>,
with some locals happy to receive us. We'll also be transporting supplies
sent to me by Americares to another group in Port au Prince. So early next
week we'll head there to do what we can. Obviously, there's a fair bit of
uncertainty, but sticking around Albuquerque watching CNN is no longer
tolerable.

My main struggle has been the idea of leaving EPC for a time, and whether to
spend money toward helping people in Haiti vs. spending the money on EPC.

In a moment of clarity it occurred to me that I'm sitting on the perfect
agency. Why would we apply to agencies elsewhere? If helping folks in Haiti
isn't within EPC's mission statement, I don't know what is. So we've opened
a separate EPC fund with $1000 from McD and me, specifically for Haiti
relief. This will help us simplify the accounting and will perhaps give
other friends of EPC a chance to help from a distance. I'll try to post an
update at least every third day to prove we're doing what we've promised.

Don't feel arm twisted here. But if you've been wondering how to help Haiti,
perhaps EPC can be your conduit. We're also accepting supplies. But if you
choose to send supplies, please include funds for transport as well. My
backpack is only so big, and it's already topped.

We're not Partners in Health, the Red Cross, DMAT or any other large agency
built for disaster relief. If you have a mind to donate to them, please do
it and don't send a dime to us. Last thing I want is to be accused of
capitalizing on disaster and diverting money from the pros.

But if you think our small effort may be worth your humanitarian gamble,
please make checks to:

Endorphin Power Company
Haiti Relief Fund
509 Cardenas Dr. SE
Albuquerque, NM 87108

Write "for Haiti" on the checks to restrict the funds to this specific task.

Write "unrestricted", or leave blank, if you are comfortable with funds
being used to support EPC as well. In either case you'll receive a tax
letter stating you've donated to a 501c3.

Just seems right.
Sam
