The cost of the cameras, which partly influenced which medium the home-made and amateur porn industry chose, which partly influenced the early adopters, which influenced the movie rental and mail-order stores. iirc, the betamax cameras were about 3x as expensive.
The betamax tapes were originally only 60 minutes, where the vhs were capable of 120 minutes. This affected movie rentals considerably. and when beta went to the slower play to get to 120 minutes, they lost a lot of the quality difference. Sony had a lot of difficulty with licensing their tech to other companies (control issues mainly), so the companies in their camp were slow off the blocks, and fairly unhappy once they started production. And although betamax had higher quality, many people using them did not have tvs capable of showing that off. And people who wanted better quality had other options, such as laserdisc. Although betamax lost the consumer war, it was still the camera of choice for professionals right up until high quality digital took over in the 90s.
