There are actual liberals in Texas, just not normally a majority. Houston, for instance, just elected an openly lesbian Democrat mayor. The final race was between her and another liberal, black, Democrat dude. Austin is also usually considered pretty liberal (setting it apart from most state capitols). But yeah, the school board sucks and the Supreme Court seems to be filled with troglodytes.
