NUKE TREATY

Thank you for not nuking.

It's such a pleasure to open the paper and read some
good news. There's the headline -- Russia and US will
sign treaty to reduce nuclear arsenals.

It's big news. It's happy news. The President was
bubbly: "This treaty will liquidate the legacy of the
cold war" he said.

Of course it isn't perfect; nothing is...

It turns out the weapons that are being "liquidated" can
be "liquidated" by putting them into storage.

And while is DOES covers the big warheads -- the ones no
one in their right mind would ever use anyway -- the
smaller warheads, the ones people in their right minds
ARE thinking of using, aren't touched.

And there's the clause that says either side can drop
out of the treaty on three months notice.

And then there's the timetable -- which says that the
non-liquidation liquidation of the warheads doesn't have
to be done until the year 2012. Which , coincidentally
is the year the treaty expires.

However, other than that, it's a dramatic step forward.
Because instead of 6000 ready-to-fire missiles, each
side will have only 2,000 ready-to-fire missiles and
4,000 spares.

We're keeping the guns, but removing every third bullet.

So let us be thankful. Those of us representing the
collateral damage owe a debt of gratitude to you, the
world leaders who helped bring this about; who concluded
that it should be at least a little more difficult to
vaporize large numbers of us. I hope we can repay you in
some way, if not a Nobel peace prize, then at least a
Golden Globe. And of course abundant speaking fees once
you leave office.
