That's the way it SHOULD work. Unfortunately our justice system is so broken that I don't think it would work out quite that way. More likely if they ignore you you'll spend a couple years in jail before the case gets thrown out. By the time you get out you'll be broke as a joke and not have a job and you'll be lucky to get an apology.
